Engineering Graphics - From 3D representations to your drawings, and then to reality

“The traditional method of creating technical drawings is with drawing instruments. Since eighteenth century, precision instruments have been the tools of drafters. Today, CAD software is another tool used by many drafters. The basic concepts of drawing are the same for traditional and CAD drawing.

CAD has replaced only traditional drafting tools but, the basic concepts of the graphic language are the same. Some students may think that CAD software can replace the knowledge required to construct a drawing. While CAD makes drawing easier, it does not replace the basic knowledge. As an Engineer you have to be able to manipulate also a pencil and a CAD software. The most important drawing tool is your hand.

This must be able to sketch and to draw free or with drawing tools. Your eyes will help your hand. You will learn all these knowledge by using them on your drawings. Sketching technique is one of the most important skills for an Engineer. Sketching is a quick way to communicate ideas with other members of the team before starting the CAD drawing.

The alphabet of lines and the meaning of line types is the same for traditional and CAD drawings.

Legible hand lettering is another tool used on the sketch to specify important information.”

Paré, Loving, Hill, Paré, Descriptive Geometry, 9th edition, Prentince Hall Publisher,

ISBN 978-0023913419, New York, 2004

This book will help you to study the three main standards STAS 1434 – 83 for civil drawings, STAS 855 – 79 for concrete drawings, and STAS 9773 – 88 for steel drawings.

On the other hand, you will need to know, the dimensions of the paper sheets and of the cartridge (SR ISO 5457:1994), how you are allowed to write on a paper sheet (STAS ISO 3098-1-93), at which scale you will draw the plans (SR EN ISO 5455:1997), how you will arrange the projections of an element (STAS 614 – 76 and Descriptive Geometry), how you will fold a paper sheet (SR 74:1994).
